Ekadasi and Guruvayoor.....what is the relation?

I was just wondering as to what was the relation between Ekadasi and Guruvayoorapan.....found an interesting article which clearly explains.....here is the same for you.....

Ekadashi is a highly auspicious day dedicated to Lord Vishnu on the eleventh day of every lunar fortnight in traditional Hindu calendar. There are 24 Ekadasis in a year and the Ekadashi that falls in the waxing phase of moon in the Malayalam month Vrishchikam (November – December) is observed as Guruvayur Ekadasi in the world famous Guruvayoor Sri Krishna Temple in Kerala – the abode of Guruvayurappan. In 2008, the date of Guruvayur Ekadasi is December 9.
Lord Guruvayurappan is the owner of the largest number of elephants in India and on the Ekadashi day there are special elephant processions. The day is also observed as Gita Jayanti.
One of the most important rituals associated with Guruvayur Ekadashi, is the lighting of Ekadasi Vilakku (lamps). It starts a month before the actual Ekadasi day.
The temple does not close the doors of the Sanctum Sanctorum on Ekadasi day. The temple doors which opens on at 0300 hrs on Dasami, the day before Ekadasi, is only closed at 0900 hrs on Dwadasi Day – the day after Ekadashi.
A highlight of the Ekadasi is the honoring of the elephant Gajarajan Guruvayur Kesavan – an elephant that attained legendary status when it was alive and is still remembered and honored at the temple. Guruvayur Kesavan had died on a Guruvayur Ekadasi day. On the day, the leader of the elephants at Punnathur Kotta of the Guruvayur Temple places a garland at the statue of Guruvayur Kesavan and all the elephants stand around and pay obeisance.
There is also a grant elephant procession to the nearby Parthasarathy Temple as it is the day when Bhagavad Gita was rendered to Arjuna by Lord Krishna – Geeta Jayanti, which is known as Geethopadesam Day here.
At night on Ekadasi day, there is yet another elephant procession.
On the Dwadasi day – the day after Ekadasi – there is a unique custom of offering Dwadasi Panam in the Koothambalam of the temple. The Dwadasi Panam is a token amount of money and it is considered highly auspicious.

Kids talking over the mobile - fun and exciting but DANGEROUS

Its always fun to listen and look at the young ones talking over the phone but it is found by research that would result dangerous to them.

Mobile phone usage can dramatically increase the risk of cancer in children and young adults. According to a new study by Professor Lennart Hardell from the University Hospital in Orebo Sweden, mobile phone users younger than 20 years old had a five-fold increase in particular types of cancer.

Hardell suspects that the thinner and still developing skulls of the children make them more susceptible to electromagnetic radiation. He recommends children under 12-years-old only use mobile phones in emergencies. Teenagers, according to Hardell, should only use mobile phones with hands-free sets or while text messaging.

With respect to the health of our young ones I am ready to sacrifice the small happiness that I get by listening to their cute pronunciations and words over the mobile phones :(

Mother & Daughter - Hope Avenue

Wondering as to what this is !!!It is a copy of the newsletter for "HOPE AVENUE" which was being released at the annual program called "CONNEXIONS" celebrated last week.

Still wondering as to what this is? I have been thinking of writing a post on Hope Avenue for the past 3months. But didn't know how to write something without my contributions to that :)

So here it is ....got a great chance to work with the team and I feel proud to say that I was able to help the team in designing this newsletter.

As far as I have come across.....a daughter is a mother's gender partner, her closest ally in the family, an extension of her self. And mothers are their daughters' role model, their biological and emotional road map, the arbiter of all their relationships. The example for this would be the inspiration behind this organisation - Anusha & Lalitha. I feel lucky in saying that Lalitha is my colleague in fact my Team Leader, and infact a role model not only to her daughter but also to me...

I was moved after going through the site www.thehopeavenue.org which made me to be a part of this growing organisation and work towards its success. I am sure each one of you going through the website will understand what I am talking about and would also be moved by such an effort taken by everyone in that team.

In this post, I would also like to wish success to Lalitha in whatever she is aiming at and also for putting her sincere efforts towards bringing up and encouraging the talents of the youth and the little ones.

Jana Gana Mana - Our National Anthem....atleast once a year

Long time since I heard the National Anthem.....I remember the days, when I was in school the National Anthem had to be sung compulsorily everyday in our school assembly.

Independence day reminds me of the school - flag hoisting, our full white and white uniform, chief guest, marching, school bands, and the National Anthem with musical background that used to make me too emotional.......

This composition by A.R.Rahman brings a nostalgia of my school days.......a very nice musical note at the beginning and later sung by all the singers different...... I am sure all of you would love to hear this....

This is our 61th Independence Day!

Freedom is not a Right but a Feeling!

Let's be proud to feel the Freedom!

Let's say loud we are INDIANS!!!

Vande Mataram!

Jai Hind

Independence Day is a day that needs to be celebrated all throughout our lifetime rather than one day in the whole year....

Methi - a medicinal , Indian Spice

One of the healthiest Indian spices that I use in my cooking is fenugreek seeds, called methi(hindi), menthulu(telugu) and venthyam(tamil).

Fenugreek seeds, an ancient spice, with a slightly bitter taste, are small, hard, yellowish-brown, smooth and oblong shaped. The fresh tender green leaves of the fenugreek plant, called methi or menthi, have a bitter-sweet flavor and used as a regular green vegetable in Indian cuisine like dals and vegetables.

Fenugreek seeds can be sprouted, have a slight pungent-sweet flavor and used to prepare salads. The dried form of fenugreek leaves, called “kasoori methi”, is a popular spice used to enhance the flavor of Indian dishes.

Fenugreek seeds should be lightly dry roasted before using to enhance the flavor of the dish and reduce the bitterness of the spice. The more you roast, the more the bitterness. Adding these dry roasted seeds as it is or in powdered form to a gravy or dal dish lends the dish a tangy and mellow characteristic curry flavor. Soaking the seeds in water overnight, makes them soft and jelly-like and these swelled up seeds can be easily made into a paste.

The six tastes, sweet, salty, sour, bitter, astringent, bitter and hot, advocated by Ayurveda balances our diet for optimum health and nutrition and an easy way to get the bitter taste to our diet is to add fenugreek seeds to our foods.

  • Medical research shows that fenugreek seeds lowers blood cholesterol and blood sugar levels.
  • It was also known to cure constipation, as a powerful expectorant, and is used as herbal infusion to break up respiratory congestion.
  • An ancient ayurvedic cure for dandruff - soak some seeds in water overnight, grind to a paste, apply onto the scalp and hair, leave for 20 mts and rinse. It also tones the hair, giving it a silky feel and shine.
  • Fenugreek seed paste or methi in powder form can be used as a face pack also, helps to tone the skin and cure acne.
  • Fenugreek seeds can be sun dried, powdered and stored. Other ways of intake of this spice is ....One tsp of this powder daily or soaked seeds along with water (soaked in water overnight) early in the morning.

    Bhim roop Dhari Asur Sanhare,
    Ramchandra Ke kaaj Savare.

He, with his terrible form, killed demons in Lanka and performed all
    acts of Shri Ram.

    Laye Sajivan Lakhan Jiyaye,
    Shri Raghubir harashi ur laye.

When Hanumanji made Lakshman alive after bringing 'Sanjivni herb' Shri Ram took him in his deep embrace, his heart full of joy.

    Raghupati Kinhi Bahut Badaai,
Tum Mama Priya Bharat Sam Bahi.

Shri Ram lustily extolled Hanumanji's excellence and remarked, "you are as dear to me as my own brother Bharat"

    Shri Ram embraced Hanumanji saying:

    Jam Kuber Digpal Jahan Te,
Kabi Kabid Kahin Sake Kahan Te

What to talk of denizens of the earth like poets and scholars ones etc even Gods like Yamraj, Kuber, and Digpal fail to narrate Hanman's greatness in toto.

Hanumanji gulped, the SUN at distance of sixteen thousand miles considering it to be a sweet fruit.

    Prabhu Mudrika Meli Mukha Maaheen,
    Jaladhi Langhi Gaye Acharaj Naheen.

Carrying the Lord's ring in his mouth, he went across the ocean. There is no wonder in that.

    Durgam Kaaj Jagat Ke Jeete,
    Sugam Anugrah Tumhre Te Te.

Oh Hanumanji! all the difficult tasks in the world are rendered easiest by your grace.

    Ram Duware Tum Rakhavare,

    Tanau Lok Hank Te Kanpei

When you roar all the three worlds tremble and only you can control your might.

Great Brave on. Hanumanji's name keeps all the Ghosts, Demons & evils spirits away from his devotees.

    Nasei Rog Hare Sab Peera,
    Japat Niranter Hanumant Beera

On reciting Hanumanji's holy name regularly all the maladies perish the entire pain disappears.

    Sankat Te Hanuman Chhudavei,

Acceptance is the key.... interesting article

Learn to accept your partner as he or she is. Don't try to impose your own notions of right or wrong. Compromise isn't easy. Still, it is the only way to grow, says Swami Kriyananda

Women marry with the thought, ‘He will change’. Men marry with the thought, ‘She won't change’. Both men and women are doomed to disappointment. There is much wisdom in those words. Learn to accept your partner as he or she is. Don't try to impose your own notions of what is right or wrong. The best way to change another person is to inspire him to want to change by encouraging their strengths. Never discourage them with by constantly referring to their weaknesses. The need for compromise is one of the first thing to accept in a marriage. Many people consider any compromise a “sell-out” — a surrender of values and principles. This is rarely the case. To refuse to adjust one's personality to the expectations of another, is to be pig-headed. Egotism is the death of wisdom. Compromise isn't easy. Still, it is the only way to grow and mature. Compromise makes us wellbalanced, kind, and wise.
When misunderstandings occur, question yourself — “What can I do to change myself?” To help another person in his development is noble and generous. But to feel responsible for another person's development is to
add an intolerable burden to your own.
If you feel there is something which needs to be changed in your spouse’s behaviour, concentrate not on your need to make the suggestion, but on your spouse's willingness to accept it. Be respectful of your partner's right to grow in his or her own way. For each of us

need the freedom to make our own mistakes. To be overly protective of others is to deprive them of the opportunity to gain experience in life, and therefore to grow in wisdom.
When counselling, to tell yourself, “No one owes it to me to take my advice”. Feel gratified, rather, when anything you say is accepted as worthwhile. Give others the freedom to grow at their own pace. Isn't that what you really want, yourself?

NIAGARA - JUNE 28th Memorable Day

I can never forget this day every year since the year 2007.....since this day 28.06.2007 was my WEDDING DAY.

But more than that I need to remember it as the day we had been to Niagara from this year.......THANKS THANKS THANKS!!!!!!

I have delayed in posting this because I couldn't find some leisure time to select a few photos from our album to share..... :)

WHAT A FORCE OF NATURE - AMAZING!!! AWESOME!!!

HORSE SHOE SHAPED FALLS......WATER WATER WATER EVERYWHERE.....

A BEAUTIFUL RAINBOW CAME ACROSS OUR WAY......

    WHAT AN ANGLE OF PHOTOGRAPHY.........

RAINBOW BRIDGE SEPARATING U.S.A and CANADA

These are just a few among the hundreds and hundreds of the photos taken.....but again wanted to make a note of this day/year in my diary.....of this first year Wedding Anniversary Celebration :) and also share this beautiful place with all...

    Satisfaction comes from within

Life is not such a misery as we presume it to be; misery is just our interpretation. The following technique will give you a positive approach.....just read it in a magazine and wanted to scribble this down in my Diary.....

Life is so beautiful and fulfilling that everybody should be naturally satisfied. But what happens is just the contrary. Everyone is grumbling and complaining all the time. Try this meditation from Tantra which says, “Wherever satisfaction is found, in whatever act, actualize it.” Osho gives a clue: It means when you feel thirsty, you drink water, a subtle satisfaction is felt. Forget the water, forget the thirst, and remain with the subtle satisfaction that you are feeling. Be filled with it. If you look for small moments when you wake up in the morning, you will find many reasons of being satisfied. But human mind is negative. It only remembers dissatisfactions, and blows them out of proportion. You are more vocal about your miseries than about your happiness. Life is not such a misery as we have made it; misery is just our interpretation. This technique gives you a positive approach. Do not ignore satisfaction. It can become a glimpse of a greater positive existence. You see a friend and you feel happy; actualize this. It will be good to put it in words: ‘I am so happy today.’ Feel it spreading like a perfume all over your body. It enters your throat, then to the chest and other parts and the body feels cool and content. Enjoy this feeling. Be happy in that moment, and make that happiness a door. Then you are changing the mind, and you will start accumulating happiness. Your mind will turn positive, and the same world will look
different. You have to gather satisfaction drop by drop like the honey bee gathers honey from the flowers. Each incident can give you some drops of satisfaction if you know how to look. Be filled with it, taste it, and allow it to happen to your whole being. Be one with it. The fragrance of it will follow you. It will go on resounding within you the whole day and will help you to be more positive.

Stupid questions that we ask without even realising ;)

I was reading few age old mails that was in Unread list and i happened to see this nice mail. Read when you are totally idle like me and enjoy the read. I have added few incidents that I met with and i will be happy if i come to know if i was not the only one: D who got/gave such bulbs :P

    1. At the movies: When you meet acquaintances/ friends
Stupid Question:-Hey, what are you doing here?
Answer:-Well, it's so hot; there were no cool cabs
so I thought I’d watch some advertisements in
the cool comfort of the theatre.

    2. In the bus: A fat girl wearing pointed high-heeled shoes steps on your feet

    Stupid Question:-Sorry, did that hurt?
Answer:-No, not at all, I'm on local anesthesia…...
why don't you try again or should I try this
    time."

    3. In our college canteen during Infy training session while I was eating chocobar,

My Classmate: Sam, can you give your lab note book I need to copy the reading.

Me: (Interestingly licking dripping ice cream from my hand) didn’t hear anything actually and didn’t notice him also!

Other friend: Yey Prady is asking you something. Pls come out to the world.

Classmate: You are eating ice cream huh?

Me: Huh! No I am licking the ice cream.

Actually he blew it to the whole class that I was licking ice cream than eating it!

    4. At a funeral: One of the teary-eyed people ask

Stupid Question:-Why, why him, of all people.
Answer:-Why? Would it rather have been you?

    5. At a restaurant: When you ask the waiter

Stupid Question:-Is the "blah blah blah" dish good
Answer:-No, it’s terrible and made of adulterated
cement. We occasionally also spit in it.

    6. When a friend announces her wedding, and you ask

Stupid Question:-Is the guy you're marrying good?
    Answer:-No, he' s a miserable wife-beating , insensitive
    lout...it's just the money.

    7. When you get woken up at midnight by a phone call

    Stupid Question:-Sorry. Were you sleeping.
Answer:-No. I was playing cricket for India at
Sharjah and just when you called Salim Malik
was betting with me that Pakistan would
    win. What do you think?

    8. You are smoking a cigarette and a cute woman asks

    Stupid Question:-Oh, so you smoke
    Answer:-No, it's a miracle...........

it was a chalk and now it's in flames!!!

    9. In the temple,

    School friend: Saami kumbuda vanthiya

Me: Illa parotta vum pooriyum sapdalamnu vanthen

Ilana Yahav - what a SAND PAINTER she is !!!!

Amazing video!!!! thanks to my friend who just shared it with me this morning and couldn't resist putting it in the blog and sharing this beauty with all of you .

Given me some sand to do....I would only write my name with it with great difficulty ....may be after seeing this video I will try to make some simple things like the sun that she does... ha ha ha.

What a talent....feel so jealous of her creativity ability... The way she does it is so simple and looks marvellous after she completes each and everything.

Smart Kids.....may be similar to the previous post but found them equally cute

Kids always give beautiful poses to the photos and usually feel shy to recite when we ask them to do.....but was amazed to see them cutely stand in front of the webcam and recite so well.....

In fact, the credit is also shared by the parents who patiently teach and ask them to recite in front of the webcam and upload these videos into these sites. Great job done by all the Papa's and Mama's :)

I am sure every other parent would have smart kids like these, but they wouldn't dedicate time like this to capture the videos and put them online. As far as I know the NRI 's living here take the pleasure in putting them online since their Grandparents are in India and they can see their cute little charming grandkids speak so cute.

    Sunday, June 15, 2008

    Very cuteeeee :)

How many kids of this age know our NATIONAL ANTHEM.....(I myself didn't know this at her age).

Hats off to her parents who have taken the pains to teach this little cute kid....

A very beautiful poem written on "AMMA" by another blogger Geetha , just thought to share with everyone

    *************

    ***********
